Meeting for all Art Majors and Certificates
Art faculty AND an ARC counselor will be present at the Kaneko Gallery on April 20th from 11-12 pm to introduce all degrees and certificates, discuss sequence of courses, when rotated courses are offered, and creating a planning sheet for your graduation goals.
Weston Photo Exhibit at Viewpoint
Viewpoint gallery will be showing all 4 generations of Weston photography, and it will be opening this Second Saturday, 4/9. Work on display from April 9 til June 4th.

ARC Scholarships
ARC’s Career Center is pleased to be sponsoring nine – $500.00 scholarships to students during this spring’s Foundation Scholarship Drive. In addition to the Career Center scholarships; there are more than 170 scholarships being offered thru the Foundation totaling approximately $150,000.

Viewpoint Workshop, Winter on Lake Tahoe

Join award-winning nature photographer Josh Miller photographing the winter wonderland of Lake Tahoe in February. Lake Tahoe provides photographers amazing photographic material, and in winter the crowds are gone and there is a better chance of dramatic weather. Multiple Events from Viewpoint Gallery
We are kicking off our Spring semester events this Thursday at Viewpoint with a print critique led by Gene Kennedy. Also, we have a dynamic lecture schedule planned. Renee C. Byer will be presenting a talk on "Photojournalism - The Myth and the Reality" on February 26. We are working with Consumnes River College to schedule the lecture at the campus. The March speaker is yet to be confirmed, but the topic will be on photographing art in public places as a student community project. An exhibit in the Step Up Gallery in October will be your opportunity to display the images from the project. Chuck Framer will give his talk on Gallery Matting and Presentation in April. Viewpoint Gallery Free Student Lecture Series
Lecture: Christina Z. Anderson presents "The Art and Practice of the Contemporary Handmade Print" Thursday, Nov. 20, 7 – 9 p.m.

This month, Christina Z. Anderson will present a demo/lecture about unique methods to make both the dimroom and the darkroom come alive. Drawing from two books she has authored, The Experimental Photography Workbook and Gum Printing and Other AMAZING Contact Printing Processes, Anderson will briefly explain and show examples of a range of printing processes. After the lecture, she will demonstrate one or two processes. The key concepts of time management and fostering creativity will also be touched upon. The lecture will encourage baby steps and risk-taking in one's creative practice.
Reception for Gene Kennedy Photography Exhibition
In November, Gallery 1855 at Davis Cemetery (820 Pole Line Rd, Davis) will feature a selection from Gene Kennedy’s ongoing photographic exploration of Yosemite National Park. Reception Sunday, Nov. 9, 1 to 4 p.m. Gene Kennedy, a charter member and former executive director of Viewpoint, is recognized nationally for his photography of the contemporary American landscape.

Friday November 7th @ 6pm we invite students to the yearly Photo Orientation. If you are interested in the Freelance Photography Career Certificate, come to FAA Room 509 photo lab to learn more about our course offerings, sequence of classes, how to apply for the certificate, internship opportunities and other area events.

Robert Taylor and Charles Farmer Photography
October 7 – November 1, Viewpoint Photographic Art Center features retrospective collections by Robert Taylor and Charles Farmer, two contemporary masters in the West Coast tradition of beautifully-crafted black-and-white photographs.
Free Forensic Photography Lecture
Mike Stapleton will speak about the profession of forensic photography. Stapleton, who recently retired after over 34 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, will discuss his personal experiences as a respected professional and the role he played in investigations.

The ARC Fine Arts Club is hosting a Portfolio Review Day, March 3 at 2:30 pm in the Kaneko Gallery.

Patricia Wood and Diane Richey-Ward will be going over 5 student portfolios, giving feedback on strongest pieces
and general help with artwork presentation. Students can sign up in the gallery. If all 5 spots are filled for this Monday, there will be another Portfolio Day in April.
Students may bring up to 10 pieces, preferably in the same medium.
Also, a reminder, ARC Foundation Scholarship deadline for submission online is March 7th.
Scholarship delivery day is Thursday, March 13th, from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm in Kaneko.
ARC Photo Scholarships
Gather your best work together to apply for ARC scholarships. We offer a handful of art scholarships, and photo students can apply for the Thatcher-Rout Photo Award, Kingsley Award among others; don't forget the ARC Foundation has many scholarships for a variety of students and gpas. Students need to APPLY ONLINE through the ARC Foundation Scholarships at and need to be apply by Friday, March 7h, at 4:00 pm.

ARC Facebook Page
ARC photo students are given the opportunity to have their images featured on ARC's official facebook page! This can be considered an online publication on a resume, btw. Images need to be 315 pixels high by 851 pixels long. It is suggested that you submit your top 4 images of the ARC campus. Ask your photo professor on how to send those images to our Public Relations team, who will select a variety of photos to rotate on the site. Good luck!
Guest Speaker
Zach Prez will be presenting Website and Social Media Training for Photographers at the ARC campus on October 28th from 6-9 in Photo room 509, and will have a lab demonstration of the techniques shown the following monday, Nov 4th from 6-9.

The Fine & Applied Arts division at American River College wants you to mark your calendar for Friday, May 3, 2013 for our Art Tech Day. Come visit all the Fine and Applied Arts booths and demonstrations, and see all of the programs that we have to offer. The Photography area will have a photo booth, where the first 100 students get a print out of their photo for free. :D If you're a current student and want to help in some way, see Professor Worsfold or our Instructional Aide, Marie Hoffman.
Student Financial Aid
We're always looking for work study students for the photo area to help print files, clean the lab and assist the teachers. If you're interested in applying for work study, the bog waiver or financial aid in general, there are 2 session being held this Wednesday, April 24, and Thursday, April 25 (FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Both events will be held from 5:30-8:30pm in the Learning Resource Center, room 104. Seating is limited so students are encouraged to call 916-484-8437 to make a reservation.

Donald Satterlee on Studio Lighting
At Viewpoint Gallery ~ Thursday, March 21, 6 – 8 p.m.

All students are invited to attend the second in Viewpoint Photographic Art Center's series of free lectures just for students this Thursday, March 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Viewpoint.

Donald Satterlee will present a talk and demonstration on Studio Lighting. Students will receive information and instruction on the use of studio lighting, with an opportunity to learn how to choose lighting equipment. Donald is an excellent instructor and students will come away with new ways of thinking about using light to make their images stimulating and engaging.
Student Winners in National Contest!
Hailey Parkhouse, Mike Ibe and Jennifer Enright were all selected as finalists in the 33rd Annual College Photography Contest sponsored by Nikon. Their images will be published in a book the end of March, 2013!

Viewpoint Student Night
Saturday, February 16, 6 – 8 p.m. (FREE)
Viewpoint will be hosting its monthly Student Night this Saturday, February 16, at the gallery from 6 to 8 p.m. All students ages 14 to 25 are invited to bring in work prints or digital files to show and to receive feedback on their work. Print critiques are always positive and reinforcing. John Swain will be leading the print critique. A commercial photographer for over 25 years, John is the recipient of a design award of excellence in New York's prestigious Photo District News Annual Digital Photo Contest. His work has been selected for the Crocker-Kingsley exhibit, the Graphis Digital Photo Annual, the Annual New Mexico exhibit catalog, and numerous gallery exhibitions.
This is an excellent opportunity to grow artistically and discuss your work with other students who share your interest. The event is free, and street parking is free after 6 p.m. No need to call, just show up with your images.
Nikon Photo Contest

Student Submissions for Crocker Show
The Art Club at ARC is having an art show at the Crocker Art Museum, and this is a great opportunity for you guys! There never seems to be enough photography at these things, so do yourself a favor and submit work. Submissions will be taken on October 1st and 2nd: up to 3 entries per person, and each entry is $5 if you are an art club member (you should be, if you aren’t) and $10 for all other arc students. You will need to make your submissions as Jpgs on a cd. There will be awards given, and those will be announced at the Crocker Museum during the closing ceremony, Dec 16th from 1-3pm. Student Work-Study
The photo area has need of work study students next year to help with printing, helping clean lab, some computer work and assisting students in the labs. Any courses with studio lighting are very helpful, but if you have taken any photography courses and are eligible for work study, please let us know!
Annual ARC Student Art Show
Each year ARC has their annual Student art show. Students entering the competition must have been enrolled in classes this fall or spring. Entries are due Monday the 9th, 10th and 11th of April. Entries (and detailed rules) are at the Kaneko Gallery, which is right around the corner from the photo lab.

ARC photography students will be having an art show at the Union Gallery this February. There will be a Second Saturday opening reception on February 11th, from 6pm-9pm. Union Hall is located at 2126 K Street. Please come join us!
